HOW TO IDENTIFY A VICTIM OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING? IF A CHILD

1. Has unexplained absences from school and is truant.
2. Demonstrates an inability to attend school on a regular basis
3. Chronically runs away from home
4. Refers to frequent travel to other cities
5. Exhibits physical trauma, withdrawn behavior, depression or fear
6. Lacks control over her or his schedule or identification documents
7. Is hungry, malnourished or inappropriately dressed (based on weather)
8. Shows signs of drug addiction
9. Demonstrates a sudden change in attire, behavior, or material possessions (e.g. has expensive items)
10.Makes references to sexual situations that are beyond age-specific norms
11.Engages in promiscuous behavior and may be labeled “fast” by peers

Those enslaved in the USA may be working in many venues. Indentured slaves can be found in sweatshops (clothing manufacturing), in commercial agriculture settings (fields, processing plants,canneries ), in ordinary neighborhoods (maids, baby sitters), on construction sites, in restaurants, and as
custodial workers, or in the sex industry ( under the guise of massage parlors, nail parlors, escort services, adult bookstores, modeling studios, or bars and
strip clubs).

7. Is fearful, anxious, depressed, tense,or nervous

8. Avoids eye contact

9. Has few or no personal possessions

10. Is not in control of own money or identification documents

12. Numerous inconsistencies in his/her stories

13, If foreign national,their visa/passport has been taken from the for “safekeeping”
